About Karen

Wanderlust has always tugged at Karen’s heart. An Aussie travel writer, editor, photographer and animal-lover, Karen has traveled the globe for more than 30 years. Her favorite adventures include walking with a herd of elephants through Botswana’s Okavango Delta, temple-hopping in Cambodia, carving up powder-packed slopes in Europe and blissing out on a tiny island in the Bahamas for two years.

Karen writes travel guidebooks, travel articles and hotel reviews. Her favorite assignment? Writing hotel profiles on more than 300 luxury resorts and game lodges in Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Karen is a freelance travel editor, writer and photographer, and you can see hundreds of her articles and images in both print and online media, including Forbes Travel Guide, PlanetWare: Travel Guides by the Experts, Insiders’ Guides, The San Diego Union-Tribune, Montecito Magazine, Postcard Travel, YHA Australia and Islands magazine.

Wild places, tropical islands and mindful travel are Karen’s favorite topics. Areas of expertise include Australia, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, California, France, Italy and Africa. Karen lives and breathes travel. Among the many beautiful places she has called home are the Cayman Islands, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Switzerland, British Columbia, Santa Barbara, the French Alps, Mexico and Jackson Hole.

Currently, Karen and her photographer husband, Brian Hastings, split their time between Santa Barbara, California; San Pancho, Mexico; and Australia. Together, they travel the world in search of new adventures to share with fellow travelers.
